Joan Smalls graces the cover of Vogue Italia March 2012. The Puerto-Rican born model is the first model of color to grace the cover in four years. In 2008, Vogue Italia issued a ground-breaking edition with an all black issue which featured the likes of Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, & Liya Kibede. There still has been claims that there is a lack of diversity in the fashion industry for women of color. The cover was shot by famed photographer Steven Miesel.
In an interview with New York Magazine, the photographer said of the discrimination in the industry:
"I thought, it's ridiculous, this discrimination, it's so crazy to live in such a narrow, narrow place. Age, weight, sexuality, race — every kind of prejudice."
