George Zimmerman's Accounts of Travyon Martin's Killing Under Fire?
Who was Trayvon Martin? From accounts he was a young, African-American, 17-year-old male who was visiting his father. He had come from Miami to spend some time with his family. The All-Star 2012 Basketball Game was on. He enjoyed the game but he wanted to go to the convenience store to get some Skittles & an Arizona Ice-T.
He did that, but he would have never thought what the next set of events would happen. As Martin began walking back from the store to his dad's gated community he was noticed by an overly-zealos self-proclaimed security patrolman, who lived in the gated community. According to Zimmerman, who was patrolling in a sports-utility vehicle, he called 911 to report "a suspicious guy."
He continued, "This guy looks like he's up to no good or he's on drugs or something," Zimmerman told the dispatcher. "It's raining, and he's just walking around looking about." The man tried to explain where he was. "Now he's coming towards me. He's got his hand in his waistband. And he's a black male…Something's wrong with him. Yup, he's coming to check me out. He's got something in his hands. I don't know what his deal is…These assholes, they always get away."
He discusses further with the dispatcher his location, Zimmerman exclaimed, "Shit he's running," and the following sounds suggest he left his vehicle to run after Martin.
"Are you following him?" the dispatcher asked. Zimmerman replied: "Yep."
"Okay, we don't need you to do that," the dispatcher warned.
Moments later, according to other callers to 911 in the neighborhood, Zimmerman and Martin got into a wrestling match on the ground. One of the pair could be heard screaming for help, which many assumed it was Martin. Then a single shot rang out, and Martin lay dead.
This is where all the hell broke loose. From some who got to the scene, Zimmerman was over him and Trayvone lay dead. There were know other accounts that were known, but now, it has been revealed that Trayvon was on his cell phone with his girlfriend from Miami, who is 16.
She tells a totally different story of the events that happened on February 26,2012.
The girl is finally speaking out, in her account she says:
"He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man," the girl told ABC News. "I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run but he said he was not going to run.
According to accounts and the girls' statement, they have been able to deduce that Trayvon did run. Since he ran, Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and chased him. At some point they came face-to-face and the girl says Trayvon asked Zimmerman "What are you following me for? Zimmerman replies "What are you doing here?"
"He knew he was being followed and tried to get away from the guy, and the guy still caught up with him," Tracey Martin, Trayvon's father, told ABC. "And that's the most disturbing part: He thought he had got away from the guy, and the guy back-tracked for him.
The family's attorney says that the 16-year-olds account of what happened is slowly putting the dots together, The last call Martin made was at 7:12p.m.and at that time Zimmerman was on the phone with 911. At 7:17p.m., is when Trayvon took off running.
At some point they met, Trayvon asked him why is was following him, a scuffle ensued but Zimmerman had the gun and used it. Trayvon lay dead after a shot plowed into his chest.
The Sandford police say they don't have enough evidence to arrest him, but this now seems to the contrary. Reports have surfaced of witnesses saying they have said that Zimmerman was the aggressor and the police would twist their testimony to fit a self-defense theory. One witness said one investigator said it was self-defense at the scene.
Now the Department of Justice and the FBI will handle the case and say they will "conduct a thorough and independent review of the entire case". They will take appropriate action at the end of the conclusion of the investigation. The Seminole State Attorney says he will convene a grand jury to see if Zimmerman should be charged in Martin's death.
Now there is heart-break, tragedy and outrage. Many are calling for Zimmerman to be arrested. What does this say about our justice system, race. You would think that in 2012 we would be able to advance and not have to be judged by what we wear or assumed to be "suspicious" because of the color of our skin. This tragedy should enlighten us. Race exists, hate exists in our neighborhoods, towns, even in politics. If we can get past the race, maybe we can get to know a person for who they are and not for what they look like.
There are reports that say Zimmerman told police he had no record at the scene, when he had an 05 battery against a police and there are reports that the Seminole police told Trayvon's father that Zimmerman had a "squeaky clean" record, when he didn't. The moral of the story is that a tragedy has happened and this young man's life should not be in vain. This is a lesson.
Though Treyvon is gone. I hope his life will shine a light on a subject that people are so afraid to talk about, stereotypes, race, violence & what to do about it.
May he rest in peace. Trayvon Martin…….What a life you had ahead of you.
