Buying Stocks For Kids: Surprising Gift For Your Child’s Future

Buying Stocks For Kids: Secure Their Future

Stocks And Investing For Kids

We buy all types of things for our children: toys, clothes, shoes, but have you ever thought of buying stocks for your child, nephew, or niece.  Well this could be a gift that could last a lifetime.  In this time of uncertainty and recession, it is important to think about the financial future of children.  This can help lay the foundation for a good financial future for a child.  It has been said that it is best to start as early as you can and the best remedy for making money is time;  the best friend of money is "compounding".

If you purchase a stock when a child is younger, by the time the child reaches adulthood, you can have built a nice nest egg for the child to start out with.  If you have never looked into stock for your child, a way to get started is by learning all you can about stock. Find books and video recordings that will teach you and your child about investing and learn together.  Repetition is key to teaching a child about stocks.  Here are a few tips to help you choose companies that offer stock to start your child's pathway to their financial future.  Purchasing a stock can teach a child how to build capital as well.

1. A good place to start is to choose companies that are well-known and have staying power.  Think of brands that you use everyday, such as Disney, Coco-Cola, Pepsi, Golden-Flakes and many others.  You want a company that pays a good dividend.  A dividend is a payment paid by a company, which is usually paid regulary each quater, to its  shareholders, who purchased stock in the company.

2.   Purchase as soon as you can.  The best friend of an investment is time.  The sooner you purchase a stock for your child, the more time it has to mature and make interest from its initial investment. It's best to reinvest the money over and over again and not to touch it.

3.  Make investing fun and get the child involved. Find literature that will help them understand but doesn't oversimply stock for the child.  As always, stocks come with risk, but there are ways to introduce the child to stocks in a way they can understand the good and the bad.

One way to get started is by checking out OneShare. You can buy one share of a stock and have it framed.  (There are downsides to this.  It can get more expensive than the purchase of the stock  once you add the price of framing and you may have to pay a high transfer fee.)

You can start a brokerage account in the child's name.  You can pay low commissions and low have no minimum balance.  Your child can add money to the account as well and you could teach the child how to access the account.

These are just a few tips and ways to get you thinking about the value of stocks as long-term gift ideas and creating a finacial future that could have a positive affect on your child's life.  Buying stocks for your kids is not something that you have to do, but it is something to think about doing!

Trayvon Martin Updates: George Zimmerman Attorney Says He’s Not Hiding From Authorities

Trayvon Martin Updates: George Zimmerman Attorney Says He's Not Hiding From Authorities

Craig Sooner, George Zimmerman's attorney, said Zimmerman is not hiding from police and he will turn himself in should he be charged with a crime.  Sooner told Reuters:

"If he’s charged, he will be arrested and he will turn himself in. However it goes, he’s not hiding from the authorities. If he is asked, he will turn himself in. There’s not going to be a manhunt or anything like that."

During another interview with Tell Me Moore's Michael Martin, his attorney said "this isn't a race issue." He stated he[Ziimmerman] had black friends that will vouch for him.  He stated:

"In one case, he said, Zimmerman, who is white of Hispanic descent, mentored a black woman's daughter and son. He asked the woman if Zimmerman was a racist and whether he used racial slurs, and she answered no. "She had good things to say," said Sonner adding that both that woman and another black friend of Zimmerman's won't come forward because they are afraid of backlash."

The video footage of Zimmerman getting taken into the Sanford jail showed little or no evidence of injury to Zimmerman, but the video was enhanced and showed an apparent gash or injury to his head which led some to begin to speculate that it gave life to his claim of self-defense.  He claimed that he lost sight of Trayvon after pursuing him and on his way back to his car, Trayvon confronted him, asked him if he had a problem and he said "no".  Then he claims Trayvon said "well you do no," punched him in the nose, and then banged his head into the concrete.

Now, Dr. Vidor Freidman of Florida College of Emergency Physicians, reviewed the footage and paid close attention to his nose and says there are no apparent evidence of a broken nose. ABC News reports:

"If somebody had been beating his head against concrete I'd think we'd see more obvious scrapes," Friedman said. He also said he would expect to see bandages on Zimmerman's head.

More significantly for Friedman was the condition of Zimmerman's nose.

"All of the ridges in his nose are clearly defined. You would expect significant swelling in the hour or two after a break. There appears to be none. It doesn't look like his nose was broken or badly broken," Friedman said.

This story continues to develop day-by-day and rallies and outcry for Zimmerman's arrest continue nationally, although Zimmerman does have his own supporters.

Oprah Winfrey News: OWN Mistakes and What I Would Tell My Younger Self

Oprah Winfrey News: OWN Mistakes and What I Would Tell My Younger Self

Oprah appeared on the CBS Morning Show and talked candidly about OWN and the mistakes and its woes.  She said that if she had it to do all over again, she may not have launched the OWN Network.  The Big O stated:

"The idea of creating a network was something that I wanted to do. Had I known that it was this difficult, I might have done something else".  She continued, "It's like, having the wedding when you know you're not ready. And you're walking down the aisle and you're saying, 'Oh, I don't know if we should be walking down the aisle. Maybe we should have postponed this. … I would have probably waited until I actually finished 'The Oprah Show.' Because from the day that David Zaslav (the head of Discovery Communications) came in to see me, I said to him, 'The thing that I'm worried about who's going to lead this train because I can't do it.' I know how hard it is to do a daily show…and I'm in Chicago and that's in Los Angeles. That's going to be very hard.

OWN has struggled in the ratings since its inception with Oprah most recently having to ax the Rosie O'Donnell's talk show on the network and axing 30 staff members from the OWN Network.

In other O news,in  the May edition of O Magazine, the mogul writes an open letter to herself about what she would tell her 25 year old self.  She writes:

Dear beautiful brown-skinned girl,

I look into your eyes and see the light and hope of myself.

In this photo you are just about to turn 20, posing outside the television station where you were recently hired as a reporter. You're proud of yourself for getting the job, but uncertain you'll be able to manage all your college classes before 1 and arrive at the station by 1:30 for a full day's work. Even so, your biggest concern is how to manage your love life with Bubba. Yes, you are dating someone named Bubba.

On this day you've brought him to the station to see where you work, hoping he'll be proud, too. He seems less than impressed. The truth is, he's intimidated. You don't know this, though, because you can see yourself only through his eyes. A lesson you will have to learn again and again: to see yourself with your own eyes, to love yourself from your own heart.

You've spent too many days and years trying to please others and be what they wanted you to be. You will have to learn that the wounds of your past—rape, molestation, whippings for "stepping out of place," and not being allowed to show anger or cry afterward—damaged your self-esteem. Yet through it all, you've held on to a belief in God and God's belief in you.

That will be your single greatest gift: knowing there is a power greater than yourself and trusting that Force to guide you.

The trajectory of your life changed the day you answered the call from Chris Clark, the news director at WLAC-TV. Your response was ignited by the words of your then-favorite Bible verse, Philippians 3:14. "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

Knowing there is a "high calling" is what will sustain and fulfill you.

From where I sit now, viewing your journey, there are few regrets. Only months before this picture was taken, you wrote a poem about a "woman becoming." Even then you understood that success was a process and that moving with the flow of life and not against it would be your greatest achievement.

Love you deeply,

Oprah

Other people who contributed to writing to their younger self were Katie Couric & Octavia Spencer.

McDonald’s, McMega Millions, McMEGA PROBLEMS

McDonald's, McMega Millions, McMEGA PROBLEMS

Maryland lottery officials confirmed that someone purchased one of the winning lottery tickets in the biggest lottery in world history valued at $656 million dollars.  Mega Millions fever hit a fever pitch on Friday as the jackpot was drawn and three winning tickets had been sold in the states of Maryland, Illinois, and Kansas.  There is a problem already brewing of McDonald size proportions.

Before anyone has come forward physically claiming their fair share, a woman in Maryland reportedly claims to have bought one of the winning tickets.  She would take part in the jackpot with two other winners, but fellow McDonald's co-workers say they are winners too.  The McDonald's workers say they and, Mirlande Wilson, the woman who supposedly bought the winning ticket, participated in a workplace pool.  About 15 other Mc-Donald employees claim they contributed $5 dollars each towards the lottery ticket purchase.

Miralande Wilson says:

“We had a group plan, but I went and played by myself. [The ‘winning’ ticket] wasn’t on the group plan."  She added, “I was in the group, but this was separate. The winning ticket was a separate ticket,” Wilson, who's 37 and a single mother of seven told The New York Post.

One co-worker said about the situation:

“She can’ t do this to us!” Suleiman Osman Husein, told the Post. “We each paid $5. She took everybody’s money!

The co-workers say they all pooled to buy the tickets, but Wilson is trying to stiff them.  Wilson  told the New York Post, she would make the claim today, but didn't show proof of the ticket.  Stephen Martino, lottery director, says he hadn't heard  from Wilson or a rep for her yet, but said "we don't have any reason to believe right now that it is true.  He added, "I will say that I tend to be really skeptical of all these claims.  He says he has heard of other names who have claim to won.

Lottery spokesman for Maryland, Carole Everett, said they that won't believe anyone until they produce the winning ticket!"

Update: Woman who claims to have one of the winning lottery tickets speaks!
