Living Legend: Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela celebrates his 94th birthday today. Celebrations all across South Africa and the world are taking place in honor of South Africa's most famous statesman. Mandela spent 27 years in prison, mostly at Robben Island. In his early life he opposed apartheid. He was arrested and went to jail in 1964, charged with sabotage. He was jailed for 27 years for acts to "overthrow" the government and was sentenced to life. Even in jail, he continued to advocate for his people. He was finally freed on February 11, 1990, and led his party in negotiations to establishing democracy in his native county. He eventually went on to serve as President of the country from 1994-1999. As President, he frequently aimed for equality, combating poverty, and reconciliation.
